Greenville, DE — — Motion Control – Galil, an industry leader in motion control technology, is announcing the latest product in their RIO Pocket PLC Series. The new RIO-47142 includes an internal switch with two Ethernet ports for daisy-chaining multiple RIO units. This allows management of an unlimited number of inputs and outputs without an external Ethernet switch.

On the market for five years, Galil’s motion control RIO Pocket PLC series provides a compact and intelligent solution for programmable I/O control. “Now, with two Ethernet ports instead of just one, the RIO-47142 reduces system costs and speeds system set-up when multiple controllers are required”, said Ann Keffer, Director of Marketing. “The RIO provides a cost-effective method for adding inputs and outputs to a variety of motion and non-motion applications.”

Each motion control RIO unit is self-contained and provides 32 optically isolated digital inputs and outputs, and 16 analog inputs and outputs. RIOs are intelligent input and output controllers that use a powerful RISC processor for fast handling of I/O & logic. There is on-board non-volatile memory and multitasking for simultaneous execution of up to four programs. Other standard features include variables and arrays, PID process control loops, timers, counters, web interface, email alerts, data-logging, and the ability to read position and temperature sensors.

The RIO controller can be programmed using Galil’s easy-to-use, two-letter language which is standard for all Galil motion and I/O controllers. Software is also available for converting a Relay Ladder Logic program (often used by PLC programmers) into code for input into the RIO controller.

Measuring just 3.88” x 4.26” x 1.30”, the compact RIO is packaged in a metal enclosure and provides D-type connectors for convenient interface. The RIO receives power from an external supply of 18V – 36V DC. LED indicators provide a convenient display of all digital inputs and outputs.

The RIO-47142 is $415 US in single quantity and $305 US in quantities of 100. Delivery is <2 weeks.

Motion Control – New, Three-Phase Linear Drive Does Not Sacrifice Acceleration for Resolution!

Motion Control Linear Drive Does Not Sacrifice Acceleration for Resolution!

San Luis Obispo, CA – Motion Control – The newest addition to the Trust Automation line of motion control Linear Drives is the TA330 linear three-phase servo drive. It is easily configured for three-phase DC brushless servo motors using Hall Effect sensors, three-phase AC brushless motors using external sinusoidal commutation, single-phase DC brushed servo motors in bridged mode, and brushless linear motors. Its flexibility allows motion system designers to easily integrate the latest developments in sinusoidal motor control and its benefits of zero cogging, no torque ripple, and smooth motion, into applications such as, “very high resolution” inspection systems, metrology instruments, and medical applications.

Additionally, the very low electrical noise of the TA330 motion control linear drive makes it ideal for integration in or near systems that have noise sensitive circuitry, such as transducers and sensors. Also the audible noise problems associated with PWM Drives are eliminated

This powerful 150 Volt, 900 W continuous (2700 W peak) linear drive can be configured to interface with any motion controller. Higher performance systems require a motion controller with the capability to generate the two +/- 10 VDC command signals needed for sinusoidal commutation. The third command signal is generated by the drive to maintain the highest level of precision. The TA330 Drive can be set up to operate in trapezoidal mode using Hall Effect sensors as feedback. The drive also features DTS control which allows the transconductance (torque control) to be changed on-the-fly. An additional benefit is that very high resolution control can be maintained without having to sacrifice power capability.

Additional features: The standard TA330 motion control drive requires a 24 Volt input to power logic and bias supplies. This standard configuration allows the TA330 to operate with extremely low electrical noise. For applications which are not as sensitive to electrical noise, an optional internal logic and bias supply can be provided which eliminates the need for the external 24 VDC logic supply.

Compact, measuring just 14.9 in. (37.9 mm) X 7.7 (19.5 mm) X 4.7 ( 11.9 mm), it can be used with high inertia mismatched stages and low inductance motors. Integral thermally controlled variable speed forced air cooling, a housing designed to protect against operator injury, easily made connections using ribbon connectors, SMB coaxial connectors, and pluggable-terminal connectors, demonstrate Trust Automation’s commitment to operator safety, quiet environment, and ease of integration.

Trust Automation’s motion control products include: Stand-alone motion and machine controllers, SynqNet I/O and SynqNet Drives, Brushed and Brushless Rotary Motors, Interconnect Products and Automation Engineering consulting covering Mechanical, Electrical, Software and System aspects of machine design. Since 1990 Trust Automation has provided Smart Solutions in Motion Control and Affordable Customization of motion related products.

Fall River, MA –The first private cargo capsule in the history of space travel was launched into space on May 22, 2012 from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The voyage of the unmanned “Dragon” spacecraft, developed by the Californian company SpaceX, was a historical event for all involved. Never before has a private company developed a combined spacecraft and launch system that is capable of undertaking an orbital rendezvous and then returning to earth.

Maxon motion control brushless motors were used on the voyage to the ISS to rotate the solar arrays to keep them aligned with the sun as Dragon orbited the earth, open the instrument bay door which contains navigation equipment, and lock in place the fixture that allows Dragon to be grappled by the space station’s robotic arm.

On May 25, 2012, astronaut Donald Pettit successfully used the 17.6 meter robotic arm of the ISS to grapple the Dragon and guide it to the docking point on the space station. The 4.4 meter tall Dragon spacecraft supplied 520 kg (1146 pounds) of scientific equipment and food to the ISS. On May 31, the six ton capsule detached from the ISS and splashed down under parachutes in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California on the same day. The capsule was returning 660 kg (1455 pounds) of material from the ISS. Now that NASA has phased out its space shuttle program, the Dragon is the only means of transporting such large quantities of material back to earth.

Multi Axis Motor Control EPOS2 36/2 Motherboard from Maxon

Motion Control - A Multi Axis Motor Control EPOS2 36/2 Motherboard

Fall River, MA — Intelligent control applications often call for multi-axis solutions to meet demanding motion control performance requirements. Configuring a control solution in a mother board / daughter board array is a convenient and proven method of addressing these types of applications. OEM style daughter boards, like Maxon’s EPOS2 36/2 drive/controller, offer excellent flexibility in design but require custom wiring solutions. This process is often too expensive and time consuming for designers who may not have the resources to undertake a complete development, especially with increasingly short proof-of-concept times. The new EPOS2 36/2 motherboards make product development faster and easier, giving the designer either a standalone multi-axis motor controller or one that can be integrated into the final product as a sub board.

Starting with 11 nodes connected together via CAN-Open, the unique snap apart construction allows for quick multi-axis customization on a “single” board. Each node mates with an individual EPOS2 36/2 drive/controller and provides connection points. Standard cables are available in stock. Two digital inputs and one digital output are mapped on the board with an additional I/O expansion module as an option. USB and RS232 communication modules are available for users that don’t want to use CAN.

Functionalities of the EPOS 2 motor speed, torque and position controller with multi axis motherboard include:

  • Speed and Position feed forward control. EPOS supported motion controlled acceleration and speed.
  • PVT – Interpolated Position Mode. The controller is capable of synchronously running a coordinated multi-axis path dictated by interpolating points.
  • Step and Direction. Implemented for replacing stepper motors with highly dynamic brushless DC motors.
  • Point to Point motor position control. The CANopen Profile Position Mode moves the position of the motor from point A to point B. The motor position is relative to the absolute home position or the axis relative position.
  • Torque Control. Sinusoidal motor control resulting in a minimum torque ripple.
  • Electronic Gearing. Using an external encoder as a master, multiple motors can be synchronized with a user input software gearing factor.
  • Motor Holding Brake Control.
  • Position Compare and Position Mark. Save and sending of digital signal (Trigger and Capture)
  • Dual Loop Speed and Position Control. Precision motor control with load mounted high resolution SSI absolute and incremental encoders.

MotiCont Introduces New Motion Control Voice Coil Linear Motors!

MotiCont - Motion Control Voice Coil Linear Motors

Van Nuys, CA – Linear DC Motors, Voice Coil Motors (VCM) or Voice Coil Actuators (VCA) are the simplest type of electric motors for motion control applications. These motors consist of two separate parts; the magnetic housing and the coil.

Applying a voltage across the terminals of the motor causes the motor to move to one direction. Reversing the polarity of the applied voltage will move the motor to the opposite direction. The generated force is proportional to the current that flows through the motor coil. This force is almost constant in the specified stroke range of the motor.

Voice coil motors do not need commutation and using a position sensor, positioning accuracies of less than one micron or 0.00004 inches are achievable.

The non-commutated motor construction increases reliability. The direct coupling of the motor to the load allows for fast acceleration / deceleration and high speed operation.
Very high speeds and accelerations can be easily achieved.

The moving part needs to be supported by a mechanism supplied by the customer.

This type of motor may be used in conjunction with a position sensor and a motion controller for accurate positioning.

All the following motors are also available with metric thread.

Customized solutions can be provided upon request.

THE BEARING SYSTEM – Why is this important? It has everything to do with Life and
Performance characteristics of this solid, simple, yet superior actuator.

The SlipStream Belt Actuator is not only a graceful and aesthetically pleasing design, it’s got
some muscle under the hood! The SlipStream rides on the latest profile rail, caged ball technology.
The Profile Rail system takes the same loads in all 4 mounting positions: up, down, left and right.
Dependent upon load, the bearing system can see dynamic speeds to 5 meters per second.
The caged ball system also facilitates higher acceleration.
