Motion Control – EC-4 Pole 32 HD with Planetary Gearhead!

The new maxon EC-4pole 32 HD motor has been designed for extremely rough operating conditions, particularly applications in deep drilling. This 480 W motor can withstand 200 °C, 1000 G, -5000 m and 1700 bar.

Maxon motion control EC32 Hight Temp Motors are Ideal for Deep Hole Drilling

Maxon Logo

Fall River, MA — Deep drilling technology (called “downhole drilling” in the field of oil and gas exploration) makes it possible to recover oil and gas from depths of more than 2500 m. By combining deep drilling with directional drilling (dynamic position alignment of a bore in the earth), previously unreachable oil reserves are being opened up, with drilling depths of approx. 5000 m and drill lengths of up to 11000 m. The development of specialized electronics and drives has made it possible to better monitor and control many functions across the entire drilling process. For instance, it is now possible to dynamically measure and adjust the position of the drill head during the drilling process. Diverse deep drilling tools also use hydraulic valves or flaps that are operated by electromechanical drives. The temperatures and pressures at these depths, combined with the strong vibrations that occur during the drilling work, present unique challenges for the use of electronic drives.

The different versions of the EC-4pole 32 HD are designed for operation in air or in oil (flooded in hydraulic oil). The power rating depends on the surrounding medium and amounts to 220 W in air and, due to the much higher heat flow, 480 W in oil. They are designed for ambient temperatures of more than 200 °C and atmospheric pressures of up to 1700 bar. The Ø 32 mm motors must also be able to withstand vibrations of up to 25 grms as well as impacts of up to 1000 G (1000 times the acceleration due to gravity at the earth’s surface). As an example, a Formula 1 vehicle is exposed to approximately 2 G and fighter jets are exposed to approximately 13 G. The motors feature high efficiency (up to 89% in air, more than 80% in oil), making them ideal for use in battery-operated applications. With their detent-free running properties, they have excellent control characteristics and are suitable for high-precision positioning tasks in outer space, even at low speeds.

Maxon motion control EC32 Hight Temp Motors are Ideal for Deep Hole Drilling

The EC-4pole 32 HD is ideal for use in environments with extreme temperatures, subject to high vibration, or under ultra-high vacuum. This means the motors can also be used in aerospace applications, e.g. for gas turbine starters, for the generators of jet engines, for regulating combustion engines, or for exploration robots. For the use of the motor in conjunction with a gearhead, maxon offers the GP 32 HD, a powerful and robust planetary gearhead.

Maxon’s Powerful 15 Watt DC Motor for Haptic Applications!

Haptic applications are well known in medical engineering, robotics, and aeronautics. For example: An active helicopter sidestick generates forces that provide tactile feedback to the pilot of a conventional system. Such applications require a special drive. maxon’s ironless winding and precious metal commutation were predestined for these requirements. . Maxon motion control RE30 15Watt Motor

Maxon Logo

Fall River, MA — The new – big and powerful – RE 30 EB precious metal brushed motor is a special and rare drive, and for certain applications, it’s exactly what’s needed. Precious metal brushes are known for ensuring low, constant contact resistance over the entire service life, a characteristic that makes control far easier. This motor also features a low start-up voltage, even after a long period in standstill. With a rated torque of 53 mNm, the motor is very powerful despite the precious metal commutation, providing twice the power of an RE 25 EB. In addition, there is minimal high-frequency interference. These are all advantages that are only possible with ironless windings and precious metal brushes. The development of this motor was initialized by maxon customers. As a result, the motor is specifically designed for haptic applications such as surgical robots. This means the motor can also be used as a highly-sensitive sensor, acting as the sense of touch for registering mechanical resistance.

Linear Motion Application Story – Minute Man Self Lube Linear Bearings

Linear Motion – Why are LM76 Minuteman Linear Bearings™ the 1st choice when failure under poor environmental conditions is simply, “NOT AN OPTION?” Because Minuteman Self Lube Linear Bearings™ are exceptionally tough and All Weather/All Theatre Compatible! Unlike linear ball bearings which employ re-circulating balls, LM76 Minuteman Self Lubricating Linear Bearings™ offer a tough ceramic coated shell featuring LM76’s industry leading Minuteman Green Self Lubricating Liner™.

Linear Motion -LM76 Minute Man Logo

Since there are no balls or mechanical mechanisms in the Minuteman Linear Bearing, there is no mechanical failure mode. Dirt, dust and debris get wiped away whereas with a linear ball bearing, they get trapped under the seal, filling the ball raceways and freezing the balls – destroying the bearing and grooving the shaft. Minuteman Self Lube Linear Bearing™ can take a pounding from recoil, shock/vibration, vicious environments and high heat.

For this reason the US Navy and the US Army have installed LM76 Minuteman Linear Bearings in gun mounts on ships and vehicles.

US Navy – The Navy’s MK95 Mod 2 Machine Gun Mount is for mounting two .50 Caliber M2HB Modified Machine Guns (resulting in a weapon system firing rate of about1,000 rounds per minute). Each weapon is “soft-mounted” and installed with a shock absorber system using LM76 Minuteman Linear Bearings™ to reduce transmitted weapon recoil and to increase gunner controlability and hit probability.

Motion Control Application Story – LM76’s JET Rail Linear Bearings and Engineering Exceed the Challenge!

Motion Control – Linear Motion – Because LM76 understands workplace environments, manufacturing processes, and offers a complete line of linear bearing systems, LM76 was able to solve a problem and eliminate downtime!

Linear Motion - Moving Articles of Antiquity using LM76 Rail System

LM76

E. Longmeadow, MA – Motion Control – Linear Motion — When profile rail guides fail within a week bring production to a standstill LM76 was called on to supply a linear bearing system that would stand up under extreme conditions. This application story is not claiming that LM76 Jet Rail Systems are superior to profile rail guide systems. However, in this harsh environment the LM76 Jet Rail System proved to be the correct engineering option. LM76 fully understands that to our customer, their problem is “the biggest” and “most pressing problem.” And that is the way we treat it! It is our mission at LM76 to ensure that customers get the best engineering advise possible and products to match. We make every effort to provide linear motion products that meet application challenges coupled with a level of service which is truly singular in our industry.

Linear Motion - Moving Articles of Antiquity using LM76 Rail System

This lathe was orginally outfitted with motion control profile rail linear guides. Due to debris and an oily film, the profile rail blocks – with double scarper seal kits and a stainless cover – failed within one week. This lathe runs 24/7 – 365. There are several of these systems and when they go down production screeches to a halt.

Design engineer, Roger Conrad of Rogers’s Machinery was called to review the application and immediately called LM76. After going over all the operational details and reviewing photos of the failed motion control profile rail system, it was determined that LM76’s JET Rail was the best candidate for the job.

Debris build-up stripped the stainless protective cover off the rail exposing the block to further damage.

The end caps with scrapers where pryed away from the block due to debris building-up under the block.

LM76’s JET Rail Roller Block employs sealed-for-life cam followers allowing for high load capability, smooth motion and low friction. Because of it’s open design, it does not want to collect debris and the sealed cam followers ride over debris as opposed to storing it in ball races. Once the races load-up, the balls freeze, friction spikes and mechanical failure ensues. Rollers roll over debris, LM76 JET Rail Roller Block balls include it!

Here you can see that the fully supported LMSA 12 (Rc60) x 191” shaft assemblies have replaced the linear guide rails. You will also note the printing roll which will be sprayed with a liquid tungsten that has been melted by an electrode moving along the lathe bed. The moving carriage is supported by 4 JRD12 OPN-S roller blocks with scrapers. Here you can see the electrode melting the tungsten wire (among other super hard materials) and spraying the liquid onto the roll. The spray head is moved along the length of the bed by a rack and gear system.

These rolls are used in the magazine printing machinery.

To further protect the roller blocks from the super hard debris – an oily mix (similar to a lapping compound) – a faceplate with wiper has been installed to the font of the roller block housing.

This application is a classic for JET Rail because the load is compressive, contamination is present and smooth running is required.

JET Rails have now worked continuously since October and show no signs of failure. If you need a linear motion solution, do what Roger Conrad did, call LM76.

Motion Control – Maxon Introduces the New 4 mm Micro Motor and Gearhead!

Motion Control – Maxon Motor was challenged to deliver maximum power in the smallest possible space and the result is the motion control EC 4 brushless motor.

Maxon motion control EC4 Motors and Gearheads

Maxon Logo

Fall River, MA – Motion Control -Maxon motor introduces the EC4, a 4 mm diameter brushless DC motor and gearhead. The typical issue found with micro drives of this size is the output power is too low for the application requirements because of the physical limitations. maxon increased the performance of this tiny motor using the latest winding technology along with the most powerful magnets available. This motor is available in two lengths; short version with 0.5 W nominal power or long version with 1.0 W nominal power.

Maxon also incorporated a high quality motion control gearhead to ensure optimum continuous running. High performance ceramics are used for the gearhead carrier to make the motor capable of high input speeds and drive torques. The speed/torque gradient of the EC 4 is an impressive 50,000 rpm mNm-1 with a continuous torque of 0.4 mNm. There are options on the windings and encoders as well as different reduction ratios on the new 4 mm planetary gearhead.

Motion Control / LinearMotion – How Do You Move Articles of Antiquity?

Linear Motion Application – How Do You Move Articles of Antiquity?

Very Carefully With A High Load Rail System from LM76!

Linear Motion - Moving Articles of Antiquity using LM76 Rail System

LM76 - Linear Motion

E. Longmeadow, MA – Motion Control / Linear Motion — The Boston Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) has to move articles of antiquity from one location to another. In this instance, they are moving a 5000 year old relief (hieroglyphics) weighing 8000 pounds to a new location in the Museum. Here is a frontal photo of the Relief from The Tomb of Senenuka.

Part of wall from tomb of Senenuka; nine stones fitting together and including two niches; lower left piece smooth limestone; upper far left preliminary black ink sketch; right of this sketch is a complete relief showing two seated figures; central piece has large scene of seated male on the left and other smaller male figure to the right; upper far right male figure relief outline; left of this again a scene of two seated figures at a table.

Senenuka Time of Khufu or Khafre (Maybe Dyn 5?) Overseer of the Pyramid-town of Khufu, Director of King’s wad-priests, Boundary official of a settlement, etc.

The MFA contracted CBI Consulting of Boston to design the frame and fixturing. Craig Barnes, an award winning architectural engineer called Mike Quinn of LM76 to review the linear motion application. Over the course of several weeks, LM76 and design partner Todd Kanipe designed a telescoping, high load roller/linear motion rail system that won approval. According to CBI’s Keith Bouchard, the linear rail system moves very smoothly and so far meets the expectations of this program.”

Linear Motion Application – According to MFA Antiquity Specialist Jean Louis Lachevere, “All of these moves present very real dangers to the artifact being transported. In this case, we have a 8000 pound relief which already has its problems due to age and the fact that it is limestone ( limestone is very vulnerable to the atmosphere ).” Seen from the front, the relief is straight. From the back, much of the top back is gone. Thus, the back of the relief has to be plastered so the back is flat. Pins are inserted to further reinforce the relief and then it is tipped on its back. It is then moved to its new atmospherically controlled display case. LM76’s design is used in the transfer from the dolly to the mounting rails and restraints in the display case. This 36” motion is fraught with things that can go wrong. One of the considerations is the possibility of an earthquake…any problem conceivable is taken into account.
