Linear Motion Application – How Do You Move Articles of Antiquity?

Very Carefully With A High Load Rail System from LM76!

motion control - linear guides

E. Longmeadow, MA – — The Boston Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) has to move articles of antiquity from one location to another. In this instance, they are moving a 5000 year old relief (hieroglyphics) weighing 8000 pounds to a new location in the Museum. Here is a frontal photo of the Relief from The Tomb of Senenuka.

Part of wall from tomb of Senenuka; nine stones fitting together and including two niches; lower left piece smooth limestone; upper far left preliminary black ink sketch; right of this sketch is a complete relief showing two seated figures; central piece has large scene of seated male on the left and other smaller male figure to the right; upper far right male figure relief outline; left of this again a scene of two seated figures at a table.

Senenuka Time of Khufu or Khafre (Maybe Dyn 5?) Overseer of the Pyramid-town of Khufu, Director of King’s wad-priests, Boundary official of a settlement, etc.

The MFA contracted CBI Consulting of Boston to design the frame and fixturing. Craig Barnes, an award winning architectural engineer called Mike Quinn of LM76 to review the linear motion application. Over the course of several weeks, LM76 and design partner Todd Kanipe designed a telescoping, high load roller/linear motion rail system that won approval. According to CBI’s Keith Bouchard, the linear rail system moves very smoothly and so far meets the expectations of this program.”

Linear Motion Application – According to MFA Antiquity Specialist Jean Louis Lachevere, “All of these moves present very real dangers to the artifact being transported. In this case, we have a 8000 pound relief which already has its problems due to age and the fact that it is limestone ( limestone is very vulnerable to the atmosphere ).” Seen from the front, the relief is straight. From the back, much of the top back is gone. Thus, the back of the relief has to be plastered so the back is flat. Pins are inserted to further reinforce the relief and then it is tipped on its back. It is then moved to its new atmospherically controlled display case. LM76’s design is used in the transfer from the dolly to the mounting rails and restraints in the display case. This 36” motion is fraught with things that can go wrong. One of the considerations is the possibility of an earthquake…any problem conceivable is taken into account.

New Panel Mount Brush Servo Drives for Centralized Motion Control Systems!

Motion Control – Servo Drive
Motion Control Servo Drive

Motion Control - Servo2Go

Greenville, DE -Motion Control Components – The AxCent™ (Axes for Centralized control schemes) product platform brings the proven and powerful performance expected of ADVANCED Motion Controls, with improvements to the design architecture that utilize years of experience in the industry and the latest advancements in modern servo system design.

As technology continues its shift from analog to digital, there is still strong demand for analog designs. The reason? Analog drives provide some attractive benefits:

  • Simplicity – It’s easy to train your people to set the correct switch and potentiometer settings.
  • Proven Track Record – AMC have been building analog drives since their inception. They have continuously improved their designs to mirror the advances in component technology.
  • Performance – When tuned to maximum performance, analog current loops can often times achieve higher bandwidth and faster response than digital current loops.

How can analog outperform digital? It all comes down to the components. In a digital system, A/D conversions and processing time can add delays ranging from 20 to 100 microseconds. This may not seem like a lot, but in the highest bandwidth systems delays of this magnitude create a sizeable phase lag.

The other driving factor is cost. Large volumes and mature designs make prices attractive for everyone (except our competitors)

Motion Control – Precisely Measure Curvature and Angles with New Dual-axis Pitch and Roll Stages!

Motion Control – Dual-axis Pitch and Roll Stages!

motion control | Pitch-and-Roll Stage

Van Nuys, CA – Motion Control – The precise measurements of angles and the curvature of objects are easily determined using two new Pitch and Roll stages just introduced by OES (Optimal Engineering Systems, Inc.). The PR100-45-01 (pictured) is driven by stepper motors and the PR100-45-02 is driven by brushless servo motors with quadrature incremental optical encoders.

motion control - stage

The Pitch axis (lower stage) is a high precision goniometer stage which features preloaded cross roller guides and a high ratio worm drive for smooth motion over a range of travel of +/- 45 degrees. It has a typical accuracy of 0.05 degrees and repeatability of +/- 0.01 degrees. Additionally, this axis has end-of-travel limit switches.

The 100 mm diameter Roll axis (upper stage) has a 180:1 gear ratio for smooth motion and has a precise pattern of threaded holes for fixtures or tooling. This axis has an accuracy of 0.05 degrees and repeatability of +/-  0.01 degrees. The Roll axis has a Home signal for initialization. Each axis features a calibrated scale to visually display the angle. The maximum speed with stepper motors is 14 degrees/second and 45 degrees/second with servo motors.  The knobs of the stepper motors can be replaced with optional optical encoders for position verification.

The resolution of the PR100-45-01 stepper motor driven duel-axis stage depends on the resolution of the step motor driver resolution or the optical encoder if a servo motor is used. A resolution of 0.001 degrees equivalent to 3.6 arc-sec can be achieved using a10 micro-steps per step stepper motor driver or an encoder with a resolution of 500 cycles per revolution.

The PR100-45-02 that features servo motors and optical quadrature encoders are used for very precise closed loop operation and greater speeds. The PR100-45-01 and -02 stages can be ordered plug-and-play with a fully a compatible multi-axis motion controller from OES.

Motion Control – Innovative End Cap Return Enables Quiet Screws!

Motion Control – Ball Screws!

motion control - ball screw end cap

Steinmeyer Logo

Question – Can Ball Screws be any quieter?

Answer – YES! The Steinmeyer, “Quiet Series”, Ball Screws featuring innovative end caps reduces noise by 50%!

Woburn, MA – Ball screws with high leads and high linear speeds are notoriously noisy. The loading and unloading of the balls against the return is the main source of noise. With steel balls and steel returns, this cycling can create a loud “whirling” sound at high speeds, especially when using preloaded ball nuts. Steinmeyer has been researching this issue, and recently announced some important results involving process improvements that may yield benefits across most of our product range.

Meanwhile, on the design side, the innovative plastic end caps provide a solution for small diameter screws. As shown in the 3D drawing below, the steel body (blue) has an integrated flange and “through the nut” ball recirculation. The plastic end caps (gray) provide quiet return, and may also include integrated combination wipers (not shown).

Quiet Series screws are designed typically for a lead/diameter ratio greater than 0.5. Due to the high lead, they are especially well-suited for use in high speed pick-and-place actuators. The screws are available in diameters from 5 to 20 mm and leads up to 32 mm! All feature dual start threads, P5 accuracy grade, and ball nuts with zero or minimum axial play. So, if you are running a high-speed application and your current ball screws are too noisy, contact Steinmeyer and ask about our Quiet Series. We may have an ideal solution that gets you running quiet.

Motion Control – Protection Against COVID-19 Contamination: Breathing Clean Air!

Motion Control – Breathing Clean Air!

Maxon DC motors are used in the blower components of high-quality protection suits.

motion control -brushless motor

motion control - maxon motorsMaxon was selected for the compact and lightweight DC motor design, ironless winding, strong magnet and producing very little vibration and noise output. Most importantly, a brushless DC motor was mandatory as a brushed motor may cause sparks that would ignite within the suit. When designing the suit, special attention was given to the placement of the blower unit sewn inside the suit, to avoid the need for heavy straps or air supply hoses. A Li-Ion battery provides more than four hours of operation of air supply with a flow up to 600 liters per minute.Taunton, MA -Motion Control – Protection suits containing an air blower element that fills the entire suit with clean air, have been used by health professionals when faced with contaminated environments. The COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented situation where these type of suits have been utilized. Maxon DC brushless motors are found inside these specialized suits. The DC motor is efficient, high-speed and robust.

Motion Control – The World’s Most Compact 3000 W Integrated Servo Motor

Motion Control – Compact 3000 W Integrated Servo Motor

Motion Control Integrated Servo Motor

Motion Control - Electromate-Logo

JVL presents a new AC Servo Motor with built-in controller, Nano-PLC and direct AC mains supply with same capacity and length as traditional servo motors

Vaughan, Ontario, Canada — Motion Control Components – JVL, the European leader in the development of integrated servo and stepper motor technology, has now again developed a new and unique product in the field of integrated motor control. JVL’s newest additions to their portfolio is a complete, high-capacity MAC motor® with rating of 3000W. MAC motor®s are complete servo systems including a high-dynamic AC servo motor, hall-sensors, encoder, power supply, driver and positioning controller and Nano-PLC, as well as facilities for incorporating various control modules such as Bluetooth, WLAN, ZigBee, EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, CANopen, DeviceNet, Profibus, Profinet, Nano PLC, RS232/RS485/USB, Process Control, etc.

New Compact Motor

The MAC motor sets completely new standards for the performance and size of servo controls. With a length of only 311.8mm for a 3000W motor with a torque of 9.55/28.6Nm at 3000rpm, this MAC motor matches the size of traditional servo motors without built-in controllers with flange 130x130mm. This has only been possible through the use of extremely compact motors and the development of electronics and mechanics that utilise the latest technologies and manufacturing methods. So what about vibrations and temperature? As with the other integrated servo motors in the range (50-3000W), both the motor and all electronic components have been specifically selected to withstand the rigorous demands required by industrial use.

Power Supply and Energy Savings

Powering this motor is easy since it only requires connection of the main voltage of 3x400VAC through the M23 connectors. Control voltage for the encoder and microprocessor circuitry is 24VDC: In an emergency-stop situation, where an approved relay has cut-off the main power, encoder position and other values are maintained by this control voltage. In some applications, however, this is not needed and in those cases an optional internal 24VDC supply can be used, requiring only an AC main connection. Furthermore highly effective switching technology is used to ensure low heat generation resulting in appreciable energy savings.

Other Advantages

One of the big advantages of using the integrated MAC motors is that you don’t need to install a separate servo driver or controller in a control cabinet. This gives you many subsequent advantages: Space savings in your control cabinet, saving of expensive motor and encoder cables, saving time (and money) for cabling, noise is minimized due to internal cabling and also installation errors between driver and motor are eliminated. In addition, service is much easier, since the motor and controller can be replaced as a single integrated unit. Hence downtime is minimized and production is maximized.

Motion Control – Case Study – Ball Screws used in Wearable Pumps!

Motion Control – Case Study: Wearable Pumps!

motion control ball screw application

motion control productsThe Next Generation of Intelligent Balloon Catheters Depend on Novel Designs of Ball Screw Driven Pumps

Woburn, MA –Motion Control Components Ball Screws – Case Study –

Situation:

In the realm of cardiovascular assist devices, recent developments have focused on fully implantable pumps. Among the first was HeartMate, quickly followed by Impella and HeartWare. Fully implantable devices are very expensive to develop and produce. Plus they are limited to patients who can tolerate the highly invasive procedure.

A key development in cardiovascular assist devices would be to combine the less-invasive approach of implantable balloons and external pumps with the high portability and reliability of fully implantable systems. This advance would allow the treatment of a much wider range of patients and conditions. A Steinmeyer customer set out to develop an innovative pump to achieve this advance in an intra-aortic system

Challenge:

One of the main technical challenges to this approach is designing a wearable pump that can carefully control the balloon’s pressurization. The pump must meet a demanding combination of performance requirements, including:

  • Precise control of pressure
  • Reversible pressurization
  • Light weight
  • Compact size
  • Quiet operation
  • Continuous performance for at least one year

Meeting these requirements was a significant challenge for their engineers. They built and tested early prototypes using traditional designs such as diaphragm pumps. But this approach required separate chambers for positive and negative pressure. The resulting systems were far too large and heavy. So they were forced to find a new approach.

motion control ball screw medical application

Results:

Their main innovation was selecting a precision ground ball screw as the drive mechanism and pairing it with a custom engineered metal bellows as the pressure chamber. Ball screws deliver exceptional thrust density while enabling high linear acceleration in both the forward and reverse directions. Surrounded by the bellows, this results in an extremely compact and quiet design. Ball screws are also known for their high efficiency (>90%), smooth operation, and long life. Their efficiency enables the use of small motors and low power consumption, which in turn reduce the size and weight of the entire system.

The engineers turned to Steinmeyer to ensure the smoothest running, highest quality ball screw. And they also knew that Steinmeyer was extremely well-qualified to provide technical support through all stages of development. Their system is meeting all of its design requirements and will soon enter late stage clinical trials.

Future:

There is an emerging trend in the development of balloon catheters to serve cardiovascular applications. Intelligent balloon catheters may one day be key to innovation. These devices will use flexible sensors and electronics along the catheter for data collection and therapeutics. They will also incorporate balloons to apply mechanical force in the heart and arteries. Ball screw driven pumps will support these future systems as well.

Motion Control – Steinmeyer Tutorial Series – Ball Screws – Explaining Load Capacity!

Motion Control – Ball Screw Tutorial

Motion Control Ball Screw Tutorial

Steinmeyer Logo

Tutorial presented by Steinmeyer – Many engineers are confused about this topic, especially if they don’t work frequently with ball screws. So let’s take a moment to explain the terminology.

BURLINGTON, MA — There are generally two load capacities given for a particular ball screw: Dynamic and Static.

Dynamic Load Capacity

The dynamic load capacity (DLC) is simply a load rating. It’s the load for a (theoretical) life of 1 million revolutions (ISO/JIS standard) or for 1 million inches of travel (ANSI standard). The DLC is critical for making lifetime calculations, since the expected life goes as the cube of the ratio of DLC to actual load. So, if the load is only 10% of DLC, then the expected life is 1 billion revolutions.

But that still doesn’t mean you could run the screw with this kind of load and expect a to achieve that life! Why? The normal maximum operating load of a general use ball screw is about 30% of the DLC. (Above that, the elastic deformation of the balls and races is too large, which may cause excessive wear.) So, if you run a ball screw with a load equal to its DLC, you may not get as much life as you expect.

Static Load Capacity

The static load capacity (SLC) indicates the load above which the screw may be damaged. Staying below SLC ensures that balls and races don’t suffer brinelling (or plastic deformation). This is critical! But bear in mind that a ball screw may be damaged in other ways with loading below the SLC: you could easily tear off the flange of the nut, snap the bearing or drive journal of the screw, or even collapse it from exceeding the buckling load.

Motion Control Application – Twenty-twenty Vision – Maxon Components Allow Surgeon to Not only See But to Feel!

Motion Control – Application

While robotic assistance systems are available for most types of surgery today, eye surgery used to be an exception. A Dutch company has changed that. A world first in eye surgery.

motion control - maxon motors© 2016 Preceyes
motion control component used in eye surgery

Fall River, MA — Motion Control Components Application – Worldwide, about 50 to 70 million people are suffering from visual impairment due to disorders of the retina. Adequate treatment is still impossible in many cases. Eye operations are always a big challenge for a surgeon, and steady hands are a key requirement. Surgeries like those for treating a detached retina require extreme precision. And when it comes to precision, human hands can’t hold a candle to robotic systems.

Ten to twenty times better precision

This is why the company Preceyes, which originated as a spin-out from the University of Eindhoven (Netherlands), has developed a completely new robotic system for eye surgery.
