Motion Control – Linear Actuator Gives Higher Throughput!

Van Nuys, CA – Motion Control Products – The new patented SDLM-019-070-01-01 direct drive linear motor with integrated position and temperature sensors is the latest addition to the series of zero backlash, zero cogging, high acceleration, high speed, high resolution, long life motors from Moticont. Also known as an electric cylinder, this compact direct drive linear motor is just 0.75 in. (19.1 mm) in diameter and 2.75 in (69.9 mm) long. Protected inside the motor housing, the linear optical quadrature encoder is directly connected to the shaft for the greatest possible accuracy.

Highest throughputs are achieved by the SDLM-019-070-01-01 linear motor when operating at peak efficiency monitoring the data from the internal temperature sensor.

The SDLM-019-070-01-01 direct drive linear motor has a stroke length of 0.500 in. (12.7 mm) and a continuous force rating of 7.3 oz. (2.0 N) and peak force of 23.0 oz (6.4 N). This non-commutated direct drive servo motor features: Quiet long life, plain linear bearings, an integrated internal 1.25 micron resolution (0.000049 in.) quadrature optical encoder with differential outputs, and a non-rotating shaft. Applications include: Manufacturing (assembly and inspection equipment), sorting and packaging, semiconductor handling, medical procedure tables and instruments, antenna positioning, dampers, door & valve actuators, agricultural equipment, shaking, and adjustable office furniture.

Direct coupling of the load or stage to the low inertia non-rotating shaft eliminates backlash and allows for high acceleration/deceleration. Motion Control – Inductive Angle Encoder by Zettlex!

Vaughan, Ontario, Canada — Motion Control – Zettlex position sensors (IncOders) use non-contact, inductive technology for precision angle measurement. Rather than the bulky transformers of traditional inductive sensors, Zettlex sensors use printed circuits. This enables compact, accurate, lightweight and robust position sensors with no contacts, no delicate parts, no maintenance, no hassle – just accurate measurements – all day, every day. IncOders are ideally suited to harsh environments – where potentiometers, optical or capacitive devices may prove unreliable.

IncOders have 2 main parts – a Stator and a Rotor – each shaped like a flat ring. The large bore makes it easy to accommodate through-shafts, slip-rings, optical-fibres, pipes or cables. The Stator is powered and the Rotor is passive. The Stator contains the electronics to receive power and generate an output signal. The output signal from the Stator shows the true absolute angular position of the Rotor relative to the Stator without the need of any motion.

IncOder inductive angle encoders do not require compliant or special couplings and the Rotor & Stator can simply be screwed to the host product. Precise mechanical mounting is not required and there are no bearings. Whereas optical or capacitive angle encoders can be unreliable in harsh conditions – notably with condensation or dust – Zettlex angle encoders are generally unaffected by foreign matter and IP67 rated versions are available. Unlike capacitive devices, there is no need to earth the Rotor or Stator. Robust, hard-anodized aluminium alloy housings and monolithic constructions are used throughout. There are no contacting, delicate or wearing parts, so there is no need for periodic replacement, service or maintenance. In other words, IncOder angle encoders are true ‘fit and forget’ devices.

For users who want to order their energy chain quickly and easily and assemble it themselves, igus now has the solution: complete kits. The kits consist of an E4.1 series energy chain, an aluminium trough, matching separators, strain relief elements and a screwdriver. This means that the customer does not need to worry about a time-consuming configuration of the energy supply system. All adjustments to the chain are made directly on the equipment or machine. The complete kits are available in three inner heights for travels from 8 to 24 metres in the igus online shop and are available from stock.

When purchasing an energy chain, the customer usually has to go through a few steps in the ordering process to correctly compile the shopping cart for his energy supply. Often the right type of chain can be found quickly, but additional products such as a trough and the appropriate mounting brackets are usually required. “Every chain configuration, like every application, is individual, so the customer has a wide choice. The e-chain expert helps to configure and order the energy supply system”, explains Jörg Ottersbach, Head of the e-chain Business Unit at igus GmbH. “However, there are also customers, for example in the area of sewage treatment plants, in sawmills or in the chemical industry, who are looking for a quick and easy complete solution”, he says. Therefore, igus now offers complete kits of energy chains for travels from 8 to 24 metres directly from stock. Longer travels can be ordered with the help of the e-chain expert. The kits consist of a proven and robust E4.1 series energy chain, the appropriate mounting brackets, strain relief elements, separators, an aluminium guide trough with glide bar and one without glide bar, matching installation sets and an igus screwdriver.

Just one click to the complete chain The kits are available in a total of three inner heights from 32 to 56 millimetres. The ordering process is quick and easy: in the online shop, besides the inner height of the chain, the customer only has to decide on the desired total length, the inner width and the bend radius. With one click the kit is transferred to the shopping cart. The user receives the complete kit, including clear installation instructions, within three to five days. igus also promises a guarantee of 36 months on the complete energy supply system. The customer can easily generate the certificate online using the service life calculator. When the machine and system reaches the end of their service life and the energy chain is no longer in use, igus will take it back and guarantee pure recycling. In return, the user receives a credit note based on the net weight.

Featuring an open aperture of 0.50 in. (12.7 mm) this low cost, clean room friendly non-commutated motor is available off-the-shelf. The light weight and low inertia moving coil of the linear actuator demonstrates: High acceleration/deceleration, high speed, zero cogging, and by connecting directly to the load, zero backlash.

The HVCM-051-025-013-01 Linear actuator has a hollow core that allows for optics, illumination, laser beams, or cables to pass through, additionally, it has a continuous force rating of 5.3 lbs (23.7 N) and a peak force of 16.9 lbs (74.8 N) at a 10% duty cycle. This compact voice coil actuator measuring just 2.000 in. (50.8 mm) dia. X 1.00 in. (25.4 mm) housing length with a 0.50 in. (12.7 mm) stroke is ideal for applications such as: Medical diagnostics and testing, laser beam steering, wafer handling, laser cutting and welding, dynamic vibration absorption, optical focusing, scanning, assembly, and positioning applications.

Two 10-32 UNF-2B x 0.25 in. (6.4 mm) deep threaded mounting holes on 1.000 in. (25.4 mm) centers in the housing and coil allows for flexible and easy integration into new and existing applications. When used in closed loop applications with an adequate optional position sensor, resolutions of less then 1 micron are achievable for millions of cycles. If a longer stroke, higher force, a smaller foot print, or customized mounting is required, consult Moticont’s team of engineers. All of Moticont’s voice coil linear actuators are available as complete plug-and-play systems, including: Position sensor, servo driver, power supply, and if required with a linear position sensor.

Motion Control – Yaw and Pitch Stages

Van Nuys, CA – OES (Optimal Engineering Systems, Inc.) has introduced three high accuracy Yaw-Pitch stages. The YP110-10-01 (stepper motor driven), the YP110-10-02 (brushless servo motor driven) and the YP110-10-03 (DC servo motor driven). The Yaw-Pitch stages are ideal for the precise measurement of angles or the curvature of an object.

The pitch stage has cross roller guides and a range of travel of +/- 10 degrees. The maximum speed is 14 degrees per second with stepper motor driven version and 90 degrees per second with the servo motor driven versions. The 65 mm x 65 mm table has a precise pattern of threaded holes for fixtures or tooling and has an accuracy of 0.05 degrees and repeatability of +/- 0.01 degrees.

The rotation center height is 75 mm and the pitch axis is equipped with end of travel limit switches to signal the motion controller to stop the motion at each end. This axis also has the calibrated indicator to display the angle of rotation.

The yaw stage is capable of rotation of large angles and features a 180:1 ratio gear. The positional accuracy is 0.05 degrees and repeatability is +/- 0.01 degrees. This axis also has a calibrated indicator to display the angle of rotation and HOME signal for initialization.

The knobs of the stepper motors can be replaced with an optional optical encoder for precision position verification. The YP110-10-02 and YP110-10-03 feature servo motors and optical encoders for very precise closed loop operation and greater travel speeds.

Situation:

In the area of automated laboratory equipment, servo-controlled pipetting modules are a key component of high-throughput systems. A major, global OEM had been using an off-the-shelf linear actuator to drive the pipette. This actuator had a limited range of capability in terms of speed, positioning accuracy, and force sensitivity. Although it met the minimum technical requirements and was cost-effective, engineers soon were asked to push performance to the next level.

Challenge:

The company decided to develop a next-generation system. Throughput was essential, as it wanted to target the largest hospitals and laboratories handling tens of thousands of samples annually. The pipetting module also needed to have enhanced flexibility to support a greater variety of operations. It should allow for a wider range of speeds and be highly accurate in both positioning and bottom-finding. Engineers were also tasked with achieving a 10-year lifetime with little or no maintenance. This high lifetime was critical because their business model included free field service. To meet these new requirements, the actuator would have to be redesigned. In particular, the bearing configuration did not support the required accuracy and sensitivity. The supplier was unwilling to modify its design. Company engineers realized that they would have to design a custom actuator.

Resolution:

They came to Steinmeyer for a precision ground ball screw. They knew that Steinmeyer had world-class quality and a very wide selection of miniature screw sizes. For this project, they were able to consider shaft diameters of 5mm or 6mm, with pitch down to 0.5mm! They selected a 6mm screw to meet the challenge. Company engineers conducted extensive performance testing on the first prototype quantities. They put the new module through an exhaustive regimen of motion, and measured positioning, force sensitivity, friction torque, motor current, and other parameters. They verified that their module design met all of the new performance requirements. The company has since achieved FDA approval for the new system and formally launched commercial sales.

Future Plans:

Noise minimization is important for laboratory equipment. The next generation pipetting module will look to ensure the quietest possible operation. The OEM will be evaluating our proprietary super-finishing process called optiSLITE. This technology removes the largest irregularities left over from thread grinding of the shaft. The resulting surface yields a noticeably smoother and quieter operation.

Encoder resolutions are available from 5 micron to 1um for application flexibility to optimize on position control. Motion Control – Application – Maxon drives heading to the Red Planet!

In July, NASA will be sending its fifth rover to Mars. Its main mission is to collect soil samples that will be analyzed on Earth at a later time. The rover will also carry a helicopter that will perform the first flights on the Red Planet. maxon’s precision DC and BLDC motors will be used for numerous mission-critical tasks.

Taunton, MA — Motion Control Products & Application – maxon drive systems are very familiar with Mars. Our drives have been used in virtually every successful robotic mission over the last three decades. There are now more than 100 of them on the Red Planet and there are likely to be more soon. The launch window for NASA’s next mission opens on July 22nd. An Atlas V rocket will launch the new Perseverance rover on its way to Mars, where it will be searching for signs of previous life on the planet.

Its most important job is to take multiple soil samples, seal them in containers and deposit them on the surface of Mars so that a future mission can return them to Earth. Several maxon motors will be used to handle the samples inside the rover.

The task of this customer-specific OEM development was to create a travel path of 150 mm in 250 mm installation space, in which the load is wider than long. The available installation space had to be completely filled with an aluminum base body in order to achieve the necessary rigidity.

Integrated ball screw with synchronous belt

The ball screw was integrated between the base body and the moving carriage plate. It was also moved downwards via a pair of synchronized pulleys with synchronous belts. The transmission error of this additional transmission element could be minimized by optimally adjusting the pre-stress, thereby resulting in only a slight increase in repeatability errors. A compromise also had to be reached on the guiding system with regard to the guiding relationship. The lateral distance between the carriages had to be greater than the distance between the carriages in the direction of travel. Less stringent requirements for straightness made that acceptable.

Motion Control – High Force Actuator to 50,000 Lbs!

Vaughan, Ontario, Canada — Motion Control — Tolomatic’s expanded extreme-force electric actuator family now includes the RSX128 actuator, rated up to 50,000 pounds of force (222.4 kN). Designed for replacing hydraulic cylinders and designed for 100 percent duty cycle, the RSX actuator features Tolomatic’s precision-ground planetary roller screws for operating life in challenging environments. Applications include assembly, metal fabrication (pressing, punching, clamping), automotive manufacturing, timber processing, motion simulators and more.

The RSX128 actuator represents a 60-percent increase in the bi-directional maximum force provided by Tolomatic’s extreme-force RSX electric actuator family. Additional frame sizes include the RSX080 which provides 18,000 lbf/80kN and the RSX096P press-model which is optimized to provide extend force up to (40,000 lbf/178 kN).

For all models, IP65 is standard for protection against dust and water spray. IP67 is optional for improved resistance of water ingress. A modified food-grade version, designed for volumetric filling and other high-force food-and-beverage applications, is available as a custom design with food-grade white epoxy coating and stainless-steel components to meet the requirements of washdown applications.

The entire RSX actuator family’s construction includes tie-rods and Type III hard-coat anodized aluminum housings. A standard internal anti-rotate feature prevents the rod from rotating without external guidance.
