Low Cost, FDA/USDA/3A-Dairy Compliant Water Dog Linear Slides!

Linear Motion Control Components - LM76 Water Dog Sliders!

LM76

E. Longmeadow, MA — Motion Control Components – Linear Motion – FDA/USDA/3A-Dairy compliant, Water Dog Sliders from LM76 feature Corro-SlickTM coated 300 series stainless steel rails and contoured WDX Polymer blocks. Water Dog Sliders can be washed down with the most aggressive chemicals and caustic foaming agents and have an operating temperature range of – 400O to +180 OF. Quiet, low maintenance Water Dog Sliders can be used: Dry, submerged in liquids, and in refrigerated and frozen environments

The hard Rc78 Corro-SlickTM coating applied to the 300 series stainless steel rails is exceptionally corrosion and wear resistant. The coating under a microscope appears as small extremely hard spheres which results in a reduction in the coefficient of friction. The Corro-SlickTM coating which becomes an integral part of the rail is not subject to cracking or micro-fractures with deflection of the rails.

Widely used in packaging, food processing, pharmaceutical, bio-pharma, bottling, medical, and dairy industries the smooth WDX Polymer as used in Water Dog Sliders has a very low coefficient of friction, does not absorb fluids, is self lubricating, is FDA/Caustic Wash Down compliant, and prevents debris from adhere to it’s surfaces.

Motion Control Application- maxon motors in the Formula Renault 3.5!

The Formula Renault racing series has become one of the most important racing series for future world-class Formula 1 drivers. Since 2012, a new, more powerful V8 engine has been roaring under the hood of the World Series racing cars. Inside it, maxon motors are responsible for adjusting the electronic throttle system.

Maxon motion control application - RenaultRace Car

Maxon Logo

Fall River, MA — Motion Control Components Application – The World Series by Renault is a combination of several racing series. The main series is the Formula Renault 3.5. The prestigious Formula Renault 3.5 has become one of the most important racing series for future world-class Formula 1 drivers. In recent years, several drivers have succeeded in making the jump from the Formula Renault 3.5 to the Formula 1, such as Jean Eric Vergne and Daniel Ricciardo of the Scuderia Toro Rosso, as well as current world champion Sebastian Vettel from Germany

The Formula Renault 3.5 is considered to be a preparation series for the Formula 1 and therefore the vehicles have many of the characteristics of the top motorsport class: Carbon brakes, semi-automatic gearshift, left foot brake, and, since 2012, a powerful V8 engine and an adjustable rear wing. In the new World Series vehicles developed by Renault, Zytek engines are used. Zytek is a British company that produces control systems for the automotive industry, drive technology, engines and hybrid technology. All 26 vehicles used in the Formula Renault 3.5 are driven by the new Zytek engines. The engine has been designed especially for the Formula Renault series. The 3.4 liter V8 engine, with its 530 hp at 9250 rpm, provides 50 hp more than the previous engine. And where the weight is concerned, the new Renault again has the edge, as it is around 15 kg lighter than the previous model. A fly-by-wire throttle control system has been integrated into the engine. This system, also called “drive-by-wire” in motorsport, electronically transmits the gas pedal movements to the engine controller. In principle, it handles how far the throttle valves are opened at which pedal position.

This gives the racing driver the ability to obtain a specific torque from the engine at a certain gas pedal position and the respective engine speed. In the case of the Formula racing car, there are three different levels (pedal maps) for different route conditions.

Maxon motion control application - Renault Race Car Motor

Strong vibrations conquered easily

Accurate control of this throttle system is handled by a maxon DC motor and planetary gearhead. This technology makes the racing cars approx. four seconds faster per round. The maxon DC motors from the RE motor family and the gearhead from the GP family were specially adapted to meet the demands of the high vibration and high temperature environment. During the test phase, the maxon engineers – in close cooperation with Zytek – verified that the engines can function problem-free under the challenging loads. “We began testing maxon’s products in July 2011 and have been extremely impressed with their technical backup and service. The motors need to work in a very hostile environment and maxon really understood the product and the problem and even made suggestions on how to improve the product to help us,” said John Manchester, Operations Director at Zytek. Paul Williams, Sales Engineer at maxon motor uk, commented: “We are delighted to work in partnership with Zytek. 80% of our business comes from modifying our products for our customers and we thrive on challenging projects.”

Motion Control – NEXEN Eclipse Servo Motor Brakes Deliver Significant Advantages!

Moton Control - NEXEN Eclipse Servo Motor Brakes

NEXEN Servo Motor Brakes

Vadnais Heights, MN – Motion Control Components – Nexen Group’s Eclipse Servo Motor Brakes offer distinct advantages over spring-engaged, electrically-released brakes. With Nexen’s servo motor brake, no energy is consumed when the brake is disengaged. (Electrically-released brakes consume power continuously, even in disengaged mode, creating heat inside the brake, which detracts from its ability to produce full torque.) It is spring-engaged/air-released (no electric coil) to keep the brake cool until it’s needed.

Nexen’s servo motor brakes are designed to mount to the shaft end of servo motors up to 20 horsepower, including NEMA 23, 34 and 42 frame sizes. The brake’s square-shaped housing allows flexibility to custom make the mounting features match the motor dimensions. The brake’s output end duplicates the motor mounting features. The input end bore accepts the motor shaft and is fixed inside the brake with a split-hub/shaft collar arrangement.

Key features and benefits of the Eclipse servo motor brakes:

  • Fail-safe, power-off engagement
  • High torque – 50% more torque than competitive models (torque range 2 to 125 Nm)
  • Zero backlash for accurate holding
  • Integral flanges adapt to any servo motor or AC motor brand and mounting style
  • High torsional rigidity, no system wind-up
  • Models configured to hold the machined end of a ball screw
  • Can be used for intermittent dynamic stopping
  • Spring engaged for holding and E-stop applications
  • High speed capability – engineered and balanced for servo applications

The Servo Motor Brake is a perfect complement to Nexen’s RPS system, holding an accurate position while work is being performed.

Motion Control Application- Maxon Drives Help People Walk Again!

At the first Cybathlon in Zürich, researchers are presenting the world’s best exoskeletons – devices that enable paraplegics to walk again. Motors from Switzerland play a central part in this development.

Maxon motion control application - Helping People Walk Again

Maxon Logo

Fall River, MA — Motion Control Components Application – On October 8th 2016, people with paraplegia are going on a footrace at the Cybathlon in Zürich. Aided by exoskeletons, they will compete against each other on an obstacle course to show the public how far advanced technology has come in this area.

Switzerland, is playing a central role in this process. Many of the exoskeletons are fitted with components from the canton of Obwalden – components without which there wouldn’t be a lot of movement to be observed.

From the planet Mars to an exoskeleton

Robotic suits have to be both powerful and lightweight. Too much weight would cause the battery to drain in no time. This presents a big challenge to developers. Most of the motors that are strong enough to power an exoskeleton are large and heavy. This is why engineers are turning to the Swiss company that already developed the drives for NASA’s Mars rovers: maxon motor. maxon drives are powerful, lightweight, and energy-efficient, meaning that they can conserve battery power, and be very durable.

“We spent decades perfecting our motors”, says maxon CEO Eugen Elmiger. A lot of money has gone into research and development. It was worth it: These days, the motors from Switzerland can be found everywhere, in robots, airplanes, cars, and medical devices.

Knowledge yields an advantage in the market

Providing competent technical support for customers is just as important as delivering high-quality products. Small businesses and start-ups often approach maxon with specific drive technology problems that they lack the expert knowledge to solve by themselves. maxon motor, in turn is able to help with its extensive experience in the field, a strength that lets the company stand out from the international competition. “Our knowledge and the ability to give expert advice are a great advantage in the market,” says Elmiger. The Cybathlon is a good example: In the field of exoskeletons, the Swiss company has a pretty clear idea about what’s important besides choosing the right motor. As a result, quite a few of the participating teams are using products from Switzerland. The same is true for other disciplines, such as prosthetic arms or legs and electrical wheelchairs.

For examples, read maxon’s exclusive Cybathlon brochure or visit the new site for technology enthusiasts – drive.tech

maxon supports the Cybathlon as a sponsor and partner

The Cybathlon games are organized by the ETH Zürich and are being held for the first time on October 8, 2016 at the Swiss Arena in Zürich. Around 80 teams from all over the world will be participating. The machine-assisted competitors will compete against one another in six disciplines: prosthetic legs, prosthetic arms, exoskeletons, motorized wheelchairs, bicycles with muscle stimulation, and virtual racing using thought control. What’s not allowed at the Paralympics is an absolute must at the Cybathlon: the use of state-of-the-art technology. “Our aim with the Cybathlon is to break down barriers between the general public, people with disabilities, and scientists,” says ETH professor Robert Riener, who invented the Cybathlon.

The Swiss drive specialist maxon motor supports the Cybathlon as a sponsor and partner. The company will be present at the games with a workshop for the teams and a small exhibition about the history of prosthetics.

Linear Motion – How Do You Move Articles of Antiquity?

Linear Motion Application – How Do You Move Articles of Antiquity?

Very Carefully With A High Load Rail System from LM76!

Linear Motion - Moving Articles of Antiquity using LM76 Rail System

LM76 - Linear Motion

E. Longmeadow, MA – — The Boston Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) has to move articles of antiquity from one location to another. In this instance, they are moving a 5000 year old relief (hieroglyphics) weighing 8000 pounds to a new location in the Museum. Here is a frontal photo of the Relief from The Tomb of Senenuka.

Part of wall from tomb of Senenuka; nine stones fitting together and including two niches; lower left piece smooth limestone; upper far left preliminary black ink sketch; right of this sketch is a complete relief showing two seated figures; central piece has large scene of seated male on the left and other smaller male figure to the right; upper far right male figure relief outline; left of this again a scene of two seated figures at a table.

Senenuka Time of Khufu or Khafre (Maybe Dyn 5?) Overseer of the Pyramid-town of Khufu, Director of King’s wad-priests, Boundary official of a settlement, etc.

The MFA contracted CBI Consulting of Boston to design the frame and fixturing. Craig Barnes, an award winning architectural engineer called Mike Quinn of LM76 to review the linear motion application. Over the course of several weeks, LM76 and design partner Todd Kanipe designed a telescoping, high load roller/linear motion rail system that won approval. According to CBI’s Keith Bouchard, the linear rail system moves very smoothly and so far meets the expectations of this program.”

Linear Motion Application – According to MFA Antiquity Specialist Jean Louis Lachevere, “All of these moves present very real dangers to the artifact being transported. In this case, we have a 8000 pound relief which already has its problems due to age and the fact that it is limestone ( limestone is very vulnerable to the atmosphere ).” Seen from the front, the relief is straight. From the back, much of the top back is gone. Thus, the back of the relief has to be plastered so the back is flat. Pins are inserted to further reinforce the relief and then it is tipped on its back. It is then moved to its new atmospherically controlled display case. LM76’s design is used in the transfer from the dolly to the mounting rails and restraints in the display case. This 36” motion is fraught with things that can go wrong. One of the considerations is the possibility of an earthquake…any problem conceivable is taken into account.

Fall River, MA — 35 degrees Celsius in the shade; the sun is burning hot. Not a single cloud in the steel-blue sky: That is the grassland plains of Kenya, with its fascinating wildlife and impressive landscapes. Documentary film teams from across the world are on the trail of wild animals. A dangerous job; no one wants to get too close to lions, elephants and company. A jeep roars through the plains on the search for the animals of East Africa. In the noon sun, a lion appears on the horizon. It is lying in the grass, almost invisible – and unfazed by the approaching jeep. The camera operator is ready. The ARRI AMIRA digital camera is ready to shoot. In a jiffy the king of the savanna has been captured – as an image.

The temperatures put high demands on the team and the equipment. Gunter Föttinger, technical lead Embedded Image Processing at ARRI, explains that the camera contains a special cooling system, which has been designed to operate perfectly at temperatures of up to 50 degrees Celsius. Additionally each camera is subjected to a cold test of –20 degrees Celsius, which the video cameras can handle without problems.

Perfect for documentaries

Animal documentaries are large productions made with as small a team as possible. The ARRI AMIRA has been specially designed for documentaries and single-operator use. The Configurable digital cameras, manufactured in Munich (Germany), have a constant high image quality (frame rate up to 200 frames per second), like the larger model, the ARRI ALEXA, which has been used for Hollywood films such as “Iron Man 3” and others.

Filter change with maxon motors

The motor-controlled ND filter (neutral density filter) installed in the ARRI AMIRA is moved in front of the sensor in situations with very bright outdoor light conditions. It reduces the intensity of the image in a “neutral” way. Neutral means that no chromatic aberrations are generated, instead, only the brightness is reduced. ND filters are important for achieving the desired look during the image capturing.

Maxon motion control Camera Components

Maxon RE 8 motors with MR encoder and GP 8 A planetary gearhead are used in this application. The brushed DC motors drive spindles in the sensor assembly that moves the filter into place in front of the image sensor and back again. ARRI chose maxon drives, as “it is the only 8-millimeter motor on the market that provides a sensible solution for a rotary pulse encoder with the same diameter,” says Michael Haubmann, hardware architect at ARRI.

Motion Control – Closed-Loop Integrated Stepper Motors in size NEMA34

Birkerød, Denmark – Motion Control – JVL presents a new innovative closed-loop stepper motor technology for its NEMA34 integrated stepper motor range from 3 to 12 Nm. JVL, the European leader in the development of integrated servo and stepper motor technology, has now again developed a new and unique product in the field of integrated motor control.
New Innovative Technology
JVL closed-loop integrated stepper motors, QuickStep®, provide higher torque, faster acceleration, torque control, stall free operation and quieter movements than traditional step motor systems. QuickStep do this with greater efficiency and less motor heating because motor phase current are regulated up and down according to need. Performance of JVL closed-loop steppers are similar to servo motors, but with higher torque and often without need of gearbox, resulting in a more inexpensive solution. Design safety factors have always been high for stepper motors to ensure stall-free operation – now with QuickStep closed-loop control design can be very close to the limit resulting in even lower costs. QuickStep is a true closed-loop control system that compensates step angle errors during a movement and correct errors within a full step. If load becomes too high speed is lowered and position errors will always stay within two full-steps. Smart digital design and very high update rates (36 MHz) means there is no need of any manual adjustment or setup. It works like a perfect stepper motor benefitting from the servo motor technology.
100% Automatic Setup No need to adjust any parameters. JVL closed-loop stepper motors always work fast and efficient to adapt motor to application. Extremely high update frequency: 36 MHz (where other suppliers have down to only 1 Hz update time). Calculations are made in FPGA and not in slow microprocessors.
Energy Saving Like servo motors QuickStep always runs at lowest possible current. This reduces the need for cooling and results in a more “green” solution.
Stall-Free Operation And No Losing Of Steps By always monitoring the actual rotor position, the control algorithm ensures that the motor does not lose any steps and it cannot stall. If the rotor is blocked mechanically it just continues right away when the obstruction is removed.
Torque Control Mode The torque can be adjusted “on the fly” by the user or by the motor’s embedded PLC program. Applications that were previously impossible for a stepper motor can now be achieved.
Higher Acceleration & Speed Stall-free operation means you do not need to worry about setting the motor to a very high acceleration ramp. The motor simply moves the load with the highest possible acceleration at any given time. The result is a much faster machine with more cycles per day.
Factory Loaded Linearization The motor and encoder are calibrated during factory production in order to reach a very high mechanical precision.
Older Motors Are Supported The Closed-loop control mode is backward compatible with older motors equipped with H2-type encoders. By updating the firmware, the user’s application can benefit from the stall-free operation with very high accelerations and lower power consumption.
Full Torque Available The motor is capable of using the full torque according to the torque-velocity curve and therefore the need to have a safety overhead when dimensioning the machine is much less. Smaller motor = lower costs.
Advantages compared to open loop stepper motors
  • Position feedback and control
  • Fast and easy commissioning. No tuning needed
  • No stalling. No step losses at all
  • Torque control
  • Much faster positioning and more cycles per second
  • Increased efficiency and thereby much lower temperature
  • Shorter settling time
  • Controls higher inertias than open loop steppers

Advantages compared to servo motors
  • Very high Torque at low speed. Often 3-4 times higher in same motor flange size
  • Very high ratio-of-inertia, often up to 40:1
  • Faster commissioning. No tuning needed
  • Lower price. Same price as open loop steppers
  • Totally stiff at standstill. Full holding torque
  • Direct drive without gearbox (better and more precise torque control)
  • Correct positioning without overshoot
  • No oscillation
  • Very short settling time
Benefit in these application from closed-loop stepper motors

Electromate - Akribis Motion Control Voice Coil Motors and Actuators

Motion Control - Electromate-Logo

Woodbridge, Ontario, Canada — Motion Control – A “voice coil” is a generalized term that refers to any galvanometer-like mechanism that uses a solenoid to move an object back-and-forth within a magnetic field.

Voice coil actuators, or non-commutated DC linear actuators, consist of a permanent magnetic field assembly (permanent magnets and ferrous steel) and a coil assembly. The current flowing through the coil assembly interacts with the permanent magnetic field and generates a force vector perpendicular to the direction of the current. The force vector can be reversed by changing the polarity of current flowing through the coil.

Voice coil actuators are typically used in focusing applications, oscillatory systems, mirror tilting, and miniature position control.

Electromate offers a full family of Voice Coil Motors & Voice Coil Modules from Akribis Systems. Features include:

  • Direct drive, zero cogging, and zero backlash

Lead screw and high quality threaded nut for long service lifeNANOTEC-LogoNANOTEC-LS28-LS35

Medford, MA, Motion Control – Nanotec Electronic, U.S., Inc. has expanded the range of hybrid linear positioning drives by models in a NEMA 8 (20 mm flange size) and NEMA 14 (35 mm flange size). Linear positioning drives include a rotating screw mounted on the stepper motor. The linear movement is generated with the aid of an external nut. These motors are ideal for the design of compact linear axes as there is no need for the coupling and the bearing support point for the screw. The small linear positioning drives are used, for example, for scanning tasks in optical, mechanical or acoustic test equipment.

The hybrid linear positioning drives from Nanotec Electronic use special, maintenance-free thermo-plastic nuts. Despite its small size, the NEMA-8 model LS2018 delivers a force of 40 N and a step resolution of 0.005 mm. The NEMA-14 model LS3518 delivers a force of 140 N and a resolution of 0.01 mm. Standard screw lengths of 75 or 150 mm are available; customer-specific screw lengths can be optionally obtained. Both actuators can also be supplied with high-resolution (2000 incr./rev.) encoders.
