Motion Control Application- Intra-aortic pump powered by miniature brushless DC motors provides heart failure patients an aid to help hearts rest and heal!

The Maxon EC 6 motor brushless DC motor is the second smallest drive in the maxon family.

Maxon motion control application - Inter-aortic heart Pump

Maxon Logo

Fall River, MA — Motion Control Components Application – Chronic heart failure patients draw hope from a new technology. A team of life science entrepreneurs in Houston, Texas has developed the first catheter-deployed circulatory assist device intended for long-term use. Procyrion, Inc.’s Aortix™ provides a minimally invasive treatment option for the more than two million chronic heart failure patients in the USA alone who are too sick for medication. This pre-clinical cardiologist tool dramatically reduces risks associated with circulatory support devices and enables treatment of younger, healthier patients before progressive damage occurs

Assisting the natural function of the heart, the intra-aortic pump has been thoughtfully designed as an alternative to large, cumbersome surgical devices currently providing full circulatory support. Unlike these devices, Aortix provides minimal procedural risk. Measuring approximately 6 mm in diameter and 6.5 cm long, a cardiologist can deliver Aortix via a catheter in the femoral artery to the descending thoracic aorta. Once the catheter sheath is retracted, the self-expanding nickel-titanium anchors deploy to affix the pump to the aortic wall.

Aortix accelerates a portion of the body’s native blood flow within the pump and pushes it through fluid entrainment ports directed downstream. The jets entrain native aortic flow, transferring energy to the cardiovascular system and increasing blood flow to vital organs such as the kidneys. Additionally, in a model of chronic heart failure, Aortix decreased energy consumption of the heart by 39 percent, allowing the heart to operate more efficiently, encouraging cardiac rehabilitation and recovery.

Maxon motion control application - Inter-aortic heart Pump

Procyrion has been working with maxon for almost two years to develop a motor for this unique and demanding application. The basis for the Aortix device is a maxon EC6 motor with some customization including the electrical lead, shaft length, and bearing assemblies – all designed to make the pump durable and biocompatible. maxon also designed a high efficiency motor core for this application, which extends battery life and produces less heat so it doesn’t adversely affect the circulating blood. In addition, maxon is working closely with Procyrion to implement a magnetic torque drive, so the motor could be mounted inside a hermetically sealed chamber. This configuration eliminates the possibility of blood entering the motor core. The magnetically coupled pump arrangement is a method sometimes used for giant pumps in the oil field, but because of maxon’s breadth of experience across multiple industries, the company was able to help the Procyrion team successfully transfer this technology to a miniature scale medical application.

Each Aortix device consists of a small, continuous flow pump mounted within a self-expanding anchoring system. The anchored pump attaches to a flexible power lead, which can be tunneled to a desired transdermal exit site or to a Transcutaneous Energy Transfer (TET) system for subcutaneous implantation without an indwelling power lead.

Maxon motion control application - Inter-aortic heart Pump

Presently, the device can operate for over eight hours on a single battery pack. The external battery pack and control unit have been designed to be “hot swappable”, meaning the battery can be changed without needing to stop the device. A variety of charging devices can be used.

“Aortix reduces the heart’s energy consumption by 39 percent.”

The Procyrion team has also built a TET charging system that enables the battery to be charged wirelessly. This design has the potential to significantly reduce the risk of infection, common with other implantable heart pumps.

Maxon motion control application - Inter-aortic heart Pump

Because traditional assist devices replace heart function rather than support it, device failure can be fatal. With Aortix, a partial support device which doesn’t obstruct native blood flow, failure is not life threatening. Should the pump fail, the device can easily be retrieved and replaced in another minimally invasive, catheter-based procedure.

Comprehensive documentation and software are included with every delivery, and are also available for you to download from our website at www.maxonmotor.com.

Motion Control – Customer Driven AC Servo Design

Motion Control Servo System

The mid-level, general-purpose 1S Series Servos incorporate valuable input from our customers to optimize use from design to commissioning.

Lower Costs and Total Cost of Ownership
The 1S Series eliminates up to 20% of hidden servo system costs to the customer by no longer requiring separate external parts such as servodrive controller cable, terminal block for I/O, safety cable, brake relay and absolute encoder battery and cable.  Regardless of power rating, all 1S power drives have a uniform height to simplify design and improve control cabinet air circulation. We streamlined I/O connection, replacing an external terminal and cable with a pluggable connector with push-in terminals that allows wiring to be prepared separately. In the process, we increased the number and mix of supported I/O.  The end user benefits from lower maintenance costs.

Advances for High Accuracy Machines
The 1S servomotors use a gear-less/battery-less, multi-turn 23-bit absolute encoder, 16-bit multi-turn to provide accurate position input. Advanced tuning functions help shorten settling time, allowing faster production speeds and greater throughput.
Expanded Built-in Safety Capability

Machine safety for rotating hazards takes a prominent position in equipment design since the recent changes in injury liability. To help OEMs simplify safety system design and standardize on one series without stocking many separate drives, the 1S Series servodrives offer both networked and hardwired safe torque off built in. Configuration of FailSafe over EtherCAT (FSoE) only requires connecting NX Series safety control units to 1S Series servos  via open network “EtherCAT”. No wiring is required for the emergency stop of each axis for servo.
First Wave of 1S Servos

The first wave satisfies 100 W to 3 kW applications. Future releases will address power requirements of higher and lower power ratings.

Motion Control – FDA/USDA/3-A Dairy Compliant Linear Motion Components

Motion Control - Linear Motion - Fluidline Linear Bearings

Motion Control – Linear Motion – LM76 FluidLine Motion Control Linear/Rotary bearings are FDA/USDA & 3A Dairy Complaint. They are also caustic wash down inert. FluidLine bearings one piece construction has benefits over traditional Teflon Composite lined aluminum bearings: if you have a wear situation, Teflon Composite Bearings have a .035″ Teflon Composite Liner. Once you wear through the liner, you are into the aluminum shell. FluidLine bearings will simply wear more and more until they are too sloppy and can replaced at your convenience. They are also less expensive in volume because there are fewer manufacturing operations. We can easily design and produce special ID’s, OD’s, Lengths and features such as flanges.

Motion Control – Low Cost, High Precision XYθ Alignment Stages from OES!

OES Logo

Van Nuys, CA – Optimal Engineering Systems’ (OES) low profile, XYθ (theta) stages are designed for high precision alignment applications. These stages move in an XY-plane and rotate around the center of the XY-plane. The terms alignment table, or XY-rotation stage are often used interchangeably with XYθ, or XY-theta stage. Available in 12 models, in two precision grades, these stages have linear travels from +/- 2 mm by +/- 2 mm (+/- 0.078 in by +/- 0.078 in) up to +/- 30 mm by +/- 30 mm (+/-1.181 in by +/- 1.181 in). Additionally, XYθ (theta) stages can rotate around the center of the XY plane up to +/- 6O. Four models of the XYθ (theta) stages have solid tables that are sized from 100 mm by 100 mm (3.937 in by 3.937 in) to 200 mm by 200 mm (7.874 in by 7.874 in), and eight stages, from 250 mm x 250 mm (9.843 in by 9.843 in) to 1500 mm by 1500 mm (59.055 in by 59.055 in), are hollow core (open frame) stages.

Available in Normal and Precision grades, these XYθ (theta) stages have preloaded cross roller bearings and typical Normal Repeated Positioning Accuracy is from +/- 1.75 µm to +/- 2.5 µm, and typical Precision Repeated Positioning Accuracy is from +/- 0.7 µm to +/- 1.0 µm.

Parallelism of these XYθ (theta) Stages is as low as 30 µm, and the larger stages can handle dynamic loads to 600 kg (1323 lbs). The stages’ surfaces are treated to ensure durability and they are compatible with OES’ line of Motion Controllers. XYθ (theta) Stages can be ordered with linear encoders for closed loop operation, customized to meet specific requirements, and complete ready to run alignment systems.

Typical applications include: Panel Lamination Machinery, panel Film Laminating Machines, print Screen and 3D printing, CNC equipment, angular glass cutting & grinding equipment, wafer alignment equipment, exposure equipment, and semi-conductor equipment.

New Panel Mount Brush Servo Drives for Centralized Motion Control Systems!

Motion Control AMC Panel Mount Brush Servo Drive from Servo2Go

Servo2Go-Logo

Greenville, DE -Motion Control Components – The AxCent™ (Axes for Centralized control schemes) product platform brings the proven and powerful performance expected of ADVANCED Motion Controls, with improvements to the design architecture that utilize years of experience in the industry and the latest advancements in modern servo system design.

As technology continues its shift from analog to digital, there is still strong demand for analog designs. The reason? Analog drives provide some attractive benefits:

  • Simplicity – It’s easy to train your people to set the correct switch and potentiometer settings.
  • Proven Track Record – AMC have been building analog drives since their inception. They have continuously improved their designs to mirror the advances in component technology.
  • Performance – When tuned to maximum performance, analog current loops can often times achieve higher bandwidth and faster response than digital current loops.

How can analog outperform digital? It all comes down to the components. In a digital system, A/D conversions and processing time can add delays ranging from 20 to 100 microseconds. This may not seem like a lot, but in the highest bandwidth systems delays of this magnitude create a sizeable phase lag.

The other driving factor is cost. Large volumes and mature designs make prices attractive for everyone (except our competitors)

Motion Control Components - GAM Gear Planetary Limit Lost Motion Gearboxes are available from Servo2Go

Servo2Go-Logo

Greenville, DE — Motion Control Components — Backlash and Torsional Rigidity are both important values to consider when selecting a high precision gearbox as they both affect lost motion (arcmin). GAM’s SPH Flange Gearbox has a single piece steel housing and ring gear machined directly inside for maximum stiffness. The helical gears are precision cut and ground for extremely quiet and smooth torque transmission with a standard backlash rating of < 3 arcmin or < 1 arcmin reduced.

The SPH series features helical gearing which brings a whole new level of power and precision to GAM’s already extensive portfolio of gear reducer technology. With special attention paid to every aspect during development, the SPH gracefully combines design and engineering, to deliver our best inline planetary gear reducer yet . For dynamic and demanding servo applications where performance is critical, the SPH is highly powerful and effi cient, yet smooth and quiet.
