Taunton, MA — Motion Control Application – The Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET) is located at the McDonald Observatory in West Texas. Its spherical primary mirror consists of 91 identical hexagonal segments, each one meter in size. Together, these individual mirror segments form a mirror with a diameter of almost 11 m, which makes it the largest in the world. The effective aperture of the primary mirror currently amounts to 9.2 m at an opening angle of four arc minutes*.

Taunton, MA — Motion Control Application – Mining companies, for example, survey mines from the air, oil and gas suppliers monitor their drilling rigs, and energy utilities monitor their overland lines. All these applications have one big challenge in common: In these often rough operating environments, the camera needs to be protected against wind, turbulence and the vibration of the carrier aircraft while being kept in a stable position. This is the job of a high-precision stabilization camera gimbal. These gimbals provide users with a stable and level platform that allows them to capture high-quality aerial images.

Motion Control – e-road bikes and e-MTBs!

Italian premium road bike manufacturer, Cipollini and Swiss bike manufacturer, TRANSALPES launch their new lightweight e-bikes with the maxon BIKEDRIVE AIR

motion control - application

motion control - maxon motorsTaunton, MA — Motion Control Products – The Cipollini Flusso is a performance e-road bike that weighs only 10.7 kg. With a weight of less than 16 kg, the TRANSALPES E1 sets standards in the electrified trail and enduro segment. Both e-bikes put a natural feel at the center of the riding experience.

There is an emerging trend in the e-bike market towards lightweight systems that are almost indistinguishable from standard bicycles. This development is supported by smaller, more powerful motors and improved battery technologies. “Integration is the key word,” says Michele Tittonel, R&D Coordinator at Cipollini. “The second generation of e-race bikes will be powered by electric motors fully integrated into the bike design and complemented with high-end components.”

Cipollini set out to develop one of the lightest e-race bikes in the world without compromising reliability and duration of assistance. Now the Italian bike manufacturer is introducing the new Flusso, which weighs just 10.7 kg

The Cipollini Flusso is equipped with maxon’s BIKEDRIVE Air system, which weighs just 3.5 kilograms including the battery. At its heart is a mid-mounted motor that delivers 30 Nm of torque. Thanks to a special free-wheel technology it’s easy to pedal even without electric assistance. Michele Tittonel says, “The natural feeling of riding is absolutely crucial; after all, physical effort should remain part of the experience.”

motion control - maxon application

Integration of the drive is also a top priority for the Swiss bike manufacturer TRANSALPES. “With the BIKEDRIVE AIR system from maxon, we want to build perhaps the lightest e-bike for demanding mountain bikers,” as co-owner Michel Juhasz explains. “The new TRANSALPES E1 rides as naturally as a mountain bike without a motor.” TRANSALPES’ lightest e-bike, with a carbon frame, weighs less than 16 kg.

The Cipollini e-road bikes and TRANSALPES e-MTBs can be configured and pre-ordered on the manufacturers’ websites.

The controller is an economical and compact solution for system designers who develop autonomous robots or shuttle systems

A significant advantage of the new multi-axis solution is that it is programmable with the comprehensive ApossIDE automation software and the license-free Motion Control Library (written in C). Integrated bus interfaces enable efficient data exchange with higher-level controllers; however, it is also possible to run complete process sequences autonomously, without a PLC or PC. The MiniMACS6-AMP-4/50/10 will be available in early 2021.

Motion Control – The Mars helicopter continues to makes history – with maxon’s precision motors!

Motion Control – Mars helicopter has maxon’s motors!

Space fans are thrilled: NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter has successfully completed its pioneering flight on Mars. This is the first time in the history of powered, unmanned spaceflight that a device has flown in a controlled manner on another planet.

motion control - mars helicopter

motion control - maxonTaunton, MA — Motion Control Products – A short flight for “Ingenuity,” but a big success for unmanned space flight. NASA’s Mars helicopter flew over the surface of the Red Planet for about 40 seconds on Monday, April 19th and landed back on four legs. From NASA’s perspective, this is a historic event similar to the Wright brothers’ first controlled flight in 1903.

With the Mars helicopter, the concept of powered, unmanned, and autonomous flights on foreign planets is being tested. This is comparable to the first Mars rover “Sojourner”, which paved the way for scientific follow-up missions such as “Curiosity” and currently “Perseverance”. “Ingenuity” is about to complete several flights over a period of 30 days, each lasting up to 90 seconds and reaching a maximum altitude of five meters.

motion control - maxon motorsmotion control - maxon drive to marsTaunton, MA — Motion Control Products & Application – maxon drive systems are very familiar with Mars. Our drives have been used in virtually every successful robotic mission over the last three decades. There are now more than 100 of them on the Red Planet and there are likely to be more soon. The launch window for NASA’s next mission opens on July 22nd. An Atlas V rocket will launch the new Perseverance rover on its way to Mars, where it will be searching for signs of previous life on the planet.

Its most important job is to take multiple soil samples, seal them in containers and deposit them on the surface of Mars so that a future mission can return them to Earth. Several maxon motors will be used to handle the samples inside the rover.
