Motion Control – Voice Coil Linear Actuator from H2W Tech used in Robotic Surgery!

H2W-Motion_Control-Med-VCH2W’s voice coil (NCC04-10-005-1A) was recently utilized as a vibration actuator in a high-frequency acceleration application for telerobotic surgery.

VerroTouch: Tactile Feedback for Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery.

Problem: Quoting the article “Though the robotic tools mimic one’s hand motions, surgeons quickly notice they cannot feel what the tools are touching, a striking contrast to non-robotic techniques.”

Observation: The robotic surgical tools experience distinct vibrations when in contact with different surfaces and tools.

Solution: Locate a sensor at the base of the tool to measure the contact with other tools and textures during surgery, and by adding a voice coil actuator that is used to reproduce and amplify those vibrations on the top of the hand controller.

Result: Again quoting from the article., “The VerroTouch system … …enables the surgeon to feel the texture of rough surfaces, the start and end of contact with manipulated objects, and other important tactile events. Surgeons have tested VerroTouch to validate its performance. The feedback feels natural, and quantitative analysis has shown that the accelerations recreated at the handles strongly resemble those measured at the tools.”
